Significant events during the third quarter of 2024
Cyclezyme AB entered into a feasibility study agreement with Circular Venture AS, a Norwegian research and investment company in the chemical recycling of plastics through pyrolysis. The agreement means that Cyclezyme is investigating the possibility of degrading PET plastic in waste to be recycled via pyrolysis, which can improve both the recycling rate and the quality of the recycled pyrolysis oil.
Cyclezyme has achieved a groundbreaking breakthrough in enzymatic recycling of PET plastics. The company has developed enzymes that can degrade commercial packaging PET without pre-treatment, which represents a significant step forward for sustainable recycling and strengthens Cyclezyme's position in green technological innovations.
Significant events after the reporting period
Cyclezyme AB has filed a new patent application covering a modified enzyme for efficient degradation of PET plastic without the need for pre-treatment. This enzyme has been shown to be three times more efficient than commercial alternatives. The patent application also includes a production method for large-scale enzyme production, which is crucial for commercial use and strengthens Cyclezyme's position in the market.
CEO's words
"The last quarter has been both eventful and successful for Cyclezyme AB. We have made important progress in our research and development, which has brought us closer to our vision of a commercially viable solution for enzymatic plastic recycling. Our technology is attracting increasing interest among various players, which creates a strong foundation for future collaborations and partnerships.
A significant success for us is in the recycling of colored PET plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) – a type of plastic that poses particular challenges for the recycling industry. In laboratory tests, Cyclezyme's modified enzymes have effectively broken down colored PET and released dyes without the need for pre-treatment, which opens up new opportunities for high-quality recycling of the plastic. Colored PET, which is used in a variety of packaging, is difficult to recycle because dyes cannot be separated through mechanical recycling. This means that the recycled plastic is often of low quality or used in products with lower requirements for appearance and purity, which limits its reuse value and often leads to it being incinerated instead.
Another important milestone during the quarter is the patent application we recently filed for our modified enzyme, which efficiently degrades PET plastic without the need for pre-treatment. This enzyme is three times as efficient as today’s commercial alternatives, and our application also includes the large-scale production method we have developed – a key component for commercial use.
We have also achieved success in our ongoing feasibility study together with Circular Venture AS. The first phase, a screening of our technology, has yielded very positive results, and we are now entering the optimization phase. The goal is to maximize the efficiency of the degradation of PET plastic in mixed plastic waste, a challenge that many in the recycling industry face. Successful optimization of our technology could lead to improved recycling processes and a higher quality of pyrolysis oil, which would be a significant benefit for both the environment and the industry.
We also look forward to participating in the Skåne Innovation Day on November 19, 2024 at Slagthuset in Malmö. During the session "Food - Packaging" we will present how our enzymes can make plastic recycling both more sustainable and efficient, with a particular focus on reducing environmental impact and increasing plastic reuse in the food industry. This forum offers an important opportunity to network and be inspired by other leaders in the field of sustainability.
The plastic problem is growing steadily, and the global PET market is expected to increase from 101 million tons in 2025 to 186 million tons in 2050. The need for innovative recycling solutions is greater than ever, and Cyclezyme is ready to meet this challenge. We see our contribution as part of the transition towards a circular economy where PET plastic can be recycled in a sustainable and efficient way."
Warm regards, Peter Falck, CEO

Cyclezyme AB: Cyclezyme AB enters into a feasibility study agreement to break down PET plastic
Aug 2, 2024
Cyclezyme AB (publ.) today announces that the company has entered into a feasibility study agreement with Circular Venture AS, a Norwegian research and investment company in the chemical recycling of plastics through pyrolysis. The agreement means that Cyclezyme will use its advanced enzyme technology to investigate the possibility of breaking down PET plastic in waste to be recycled via pyrolysis. During the project, each party will cover its own costs in the initial phase. The project duration is estimated to be a total of five months, starting this August.
PET is a major problem in chemical recycling of plastics
CEO Peter Falck states: "It is not least environmentally but also commercially very important to investigate the possibility of using Cyclezyme's technology to break down PET plastic in waste containing different types of plastic. This waste, which exists in large volumes, is a major problem in the waste industry as it cannot be easily recycled and often has to be burned to generate energy. The company in the feasibility study agreement is working on a solution to recycle the waste through pyrolysis, but has discovered that the PET plastic in the waste is not desirable for any pyrolysis technology as it results in a poorer recycling rate and a poorer recycled pyrolysis oil. By breaking down PET in the waste, you can solve two problems at once," continues Peter Falck. "Partly to recycle PET and at the same time improve the recycling of the other types of plastic. We are very much looking forward to this feasibility study as a first step towards commercializing Cyclezyme's modified enzymes and a step towards complying with new legislation within the EU. There is a great need for new technical solutions, as all packaging should be recyclable by 2030." Concludes Peter Falck, CEO of Cyclezyme.

CEO's words
"It is with a sense of joy and hope for the future that I reflect on our progress during the first quarter of 2024 at Cyclezyme AB. Our commitment to driving the development of enzymatic plastic recycling forward has never been more relevant given today's environmental challenges and new legislation. As we develop our technology, we continue to look ahead to the opportunities and challenges that shape the future of the plastics industry.
In recent months, we have conducted significant tests that demonstrate our ability to handle and recycle plastic materials that would otherwise go to incineration or landfill. These advances underscore the potential of our technology to tackle some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, plastic pollution and climate change. The main focus for the remainder of the year will be to translate the results from the lab into customer projects in order to implement the technology in the near future recycling industry.
With the new EU legislation on extended producer responsibility, which is due to be fully implemented by the end of 2024, we are facing a legislative change that will reshape the industry and set higher demands for circularity. This legislation requires producers to take extensive responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products, from design to recycling. This places high demands on innovation, development and implementation of new recycling technologies, a challenge where Cyclezyme is ready to be part of the solution.
It is a worrying truth that half of all plastic ever made has been produced in the last 15 years, but despite this explosive use of plastic, relatively few new effective recycling solutions have been developed. This imbalance between production and recycling technology is unsustainable and requires immediate action. Our development is more than just a business; it is a partial solution for the future survival of many plastic products in an increasingly regulated market.
Our participation in the REACH Acceleration Phase in Palo Alto in April not only provided us with a platform to showcase our technology, but also provided us with the opportunity to make important contacts and gain insights that are crucial for our continued development. The ambition is to further develop contacts in the US market, which is the largest in terms of plastic use per capita.
I would like to thank you all for your continued support in our quest to revolutionize plastic recycling and reduce risks to people and the environment. With your help, we continue to transform challenges into opportunities and change the way the world views plastic – from a growing problem to a valuable resource."
